These are my chickens. The friend who took the KFC photo also took video. We'd totally forgotten that he did.
He put grain, of course, in the KFC container.

We don't have any now and I miss them too. I like having a rooster just to hear him crow. But eggs have been so cheap it's just impossible to buy chicken feed for that kind of money.

I wonder how often we skirt death and don’t realize it😄

My parents-in-law have chickens. They use kitchen scraps as food, and they also do trade with someone who has lots of produce waste. I'm not sure, but I think he runs a restaurant or something. He gives them boxes and boxes of stuff that would otherwise go into the green bin and they give him some eggs in return. Maybe you can do something like that if you want to have chickens?

Many years ago, when my kids were young, we had chickens and ducks. I am in no way a farmer, not do i want to be. But we lived in the country, i love animals, and hey...baby chicks are adorable. So we bought six, at our local agway. Kept them in a tote with a heatlamp until they were big enough to go outside. We had a chainlink fenced area that was meant for the dog at one point, and hubby built a beautiful coop off the back of the shed. So, they grew up. 5 roosters, and one hen. Yup. Five. Roosters. Mean bastards too. (thanks to sally i now understand why). They used to chase my poor son all over the yard. I remember one day hearing my son scream, i looked out the window to see him running past, followed by five nasty roosters, followed by Dad with a baseball bat. Funniest thing I've ever seen. We have them all away to a real farmer shortly after!

The video taker has a sense of humor that I appreciate. That made me laugh!

Eggs are going up like crazy here! 18 for $3.89, they were $2.89 a few months ago. No fear, walmart saved my ass at a dozen for $.97 yesterday. I usually don't shop walmart but I need some V-Day things so I decided to go ahead and grab some eggs and milk while I was there.

In contrast, Jane, last week they were 37 cents a dozen at Aldi.
But beyond that, there is a Mennonite guy who raises free-range chickens and sells the eggs via all the local Mennonite produce places. He has thousands of chickens. He sells the rejected eggs (odd sized, odd markings) at his home for 50 cents a dozen. We mostly buy from him. We can't compete with 50 cents a dozen.

I don't know why they went up either, I haven't looked too much into it but I haven't seen anything on the news either. I'm going to the usual grocery store later, I'm interested in seeing if the egg prices have changed since walmart eggs did. We also just got an Aldi's in town, I thought for sure that would drive down costs at the grocery store I typically go to but I haven't seen much changing. The milk has been on sale a lot more lately but that's about it.

I've had chickens for the past 2 years - and had quite a good flock until a pesky raccoon family decided to help themselves to the chicken buffet. Every time we blocked their entry, they found another way in. The raccoons were caught and dealt with accordingly. Now Im down to 4 hens and one rooster. We plan to reinforce the chicken pens before getting more this spring. I never really analyzed the feed cost vs buying eggs because I just love having them.

I miss having chickens. Down here, eggs are around AU $4.20 (US$3.30) a dozen *sigh* And ALDI aren't much better. Stuff in general is more expensive here than the US I think, but we have health care and a better welfare system I guess, so that's our upside 🤷🏼♀️.

Friends of ours have chickens. They produce eggs but they are really pets. They have several different kinds. One hen has what looks like a little pillbox hat on her head. They named her Mrs. Drysdale.

Nothing wrong with having chickens as pets. How can I object when I basically have a cow who is going to be a very large pet? LOL
